We don’t typically cover video games here at Cityonfire.com but publisher Square-Enix has gone out of their way to hire some high-profile Asian talent as voice actors in their new open world action game, titled ”Sleeping Dogs.” Asian film buffs can keep their ears peeled for actors like Edison Chen (“Infernal Affairs II”), James Hong (“Big Trouble in Little China”), Tzi Ma (“Rush Hour”), and more: http://www.cityonfire.com/square-enix-lines-up-big-asian-acting-talent-for-sleeping-dogs/
Thanks to hit action-thrillers like “Fire of Conscience” and “The Viral Factor,” Dante Lam is arguably the biggest director in Hong Kong cinema right now. That might lead you to believe that all of his recent films would be readily available on Region 1 DVD, but sadly that’s not the case. His 2009 film “The Sniper,” starring Richie Ren and Edison Chen, has still not seen a release in the West.
A Hong Kong DVD (Region 1, 3) and an All-Region Blu-Ray with English subtitles have both been available for a little while via YesAsia, but the film is now slated for an official UK DVD release (Region 2) from Chelsea Films on March 12. So if you’re in the UK, you might want to show your support for Hong Kong cinema by picking up a copy. LoveHKFilm reports that Frankie Chan’s new film “Legendary Amazons” has made only HK$210k from 20 screens over 4 days. It’s not likely the film will even achieve HK$1 million. This is has fueled speculation that Cecilia Cheung has become box office poison.
Cheung was once a darling of Hong Kong cinema during the late 90′s and early 2000′s. But after becoming embroiled in the Edison Chen scandal and a high profile divorce from her husband Nicholas Tse, the actress decided to take a 5 year break from acting. “Legendary Amazons” represents her boldest attempt at a comeback but so far the lavishly produced and reportedly quite bloody movie has failed to woo theater-goers in Hong Kong: http://www.cityonfire.com/jackie-chan-touched-by-cecilia-cheungs-legendary-amazons/
It appears that the US arm of Tartan Video might be making a comeback with the Palisades Tartan Asia Extreme release of “Triad Underworld” AKA “Blood Brothers,” a Triad movie starring Andy Lau (“Infernal Affairs”), Jacky Cheung (“Bullet in the Head”), and Edison Chen (“Dog Bite Dog”). The film is purported to hit DVD on September 6th: http://www.cityonfire.com/tartan-video-still-exists-and-has-apparently-joined-the-triad-underworld/
